For A Wrinkle in Time, the concept of the tesseract is prominent as it is a symbol of the adventure Meg, Charles, and Calvin embark on. Eye-catching color schemes are used to bring forth a sense of modernity and amplify the bold, adventurous storytelling of the book. I imagined myself as a teen having been assigned this book, how would I feel with this book sitting on my desk, in my backpack.
In designing for Frankenstein, the harrowing internal and external discombobulation of the Creature came to mind, how his loneliness left him feeling lost and fragmented. I wanted to create a vision that was a bit grotesque, symbolic of the way others perceived the Creature, and include elements of Romanticism through the painting-like imagery in the backdrop.
Ella Enchanted has been one of my favorite all-time reads growing up. Cursed, or according to her ill-advising fairy godmother, "Gifted," Ella has to be obedient. Well, that's not how she wants to live her life. This is a relatable coming-of-age tale about Ella, who *spoiler* saves herself through her spunk, resilience, and good sense of humor, and creates her own happy ending.
While the story takes place in a medieval era, the themes are quite modern. I wanted to capture a sense of unlimited adventure and possibility while appealing to pre-teens and teens seeking a relatable read. In pastel sky blue and baby pink, varying typography rounds out the design, the colors representing a sense of girl/teenhood and the mismatched type celebrating rule-breakers.
